ASADOR GUADALMINA

We had scheduled a lot of errands today and wanted to finish them all before lunch - among them was to visit donate old clothes, baby stuff and toys to this charity shop on Marbella's Avenida del Mar. The shop is run by CUDECA - (Cuidados del Cancer) a cancer care hospice based in Malaga that provides free care for terminally ill patients. The ladies who volunteer at the store were grateful for what we brought to the shop and immediately placed the baby car seat and stroller in their window display. We also had an appointment to drop by a boutique, in the nearby Casco Antiguo, to see the wonderful designs of Antonio Seijo.

On our way home, we stopped in Guadalmina to have a quick lunch and went to one of the places we usually frequent filled with locals who live nearby - Asador Guadalmina. Here you can have a quick lunch from the many different Basque-style pintxos and tapas they have laid out on the bar. Today, we had a tortilla de patatas (potato omelette), chistorra (semi-cured sausage), jamon iberico (ham from Iberian black-hoofed pigs), morcilla (blood sausage), tartaleta de pisto (Spanish-style ratatouille tart with a fried quails' egg) and a plate of the ubiquitous green olives given to all those who order a drink. The Asador Guadalmina is usually packed for dinner by those who go to have large pieces of beef cooked on their charcoal grill. The prices are reasonable, the service friendly and the place unpretentious.

Altough the food is quite good, as in many other "asadores", unfortunately it is "polluted" by cigarrette smoke, as the owner of the "asador" has decided to "forget" about the recently passed law banning smoking in public places...

I hope they get the fine they deserve...

Don't say I didn't warn you! :P

Hi Fusta,
Thanks for checking in!
I was releived to hear about the anti-smoking laws in restaurants but I guess it will take awhile for the Spanish to accept the new rule.
It's abput time that tapas bars became non-smoking. At the most, it'll keep the air smoke-free and at the least, the floor can finally be clean instead of littered with cigarette butts.
Hope that Asador Guadalmina gets with the program soon.
G.T.

Do not enter if you are not a heavy smoker. The owner of this restaurant has declared that they are not going to accomplish with spanish tobacco laws. How can you know that they do accomplish with other basic behaviors of hygiene and salubrity?

O.K. We get the message but allowing people to smoke, although wrong, doesn't mean that the food is bad or the place dirty. Asador Guadalmina has been consistently good (we've been too many times to count) with delicious tapas and friendly service. If it is really still smoky, there are always tables outside.

This place sucks and smells. They are not enforcing the smoking-ban law in effect in Spain since 01/02/2011. The place is not safe and unhealthy. Don't go there.

Ahhh, now I understand the controversy and the negative comments. It seems that the owner had decided to defy the law by placing a sign on the restaurant window stating that smoking is still allowed at the Asador Guadalmina.

I have to say that although the food is very, very good at the Asador, I wouldn't go there in principle for the fact that they are openly going against the new anti-smoking law. That's the way of the world and the Asador should comply ASAP.
