We used to go to frequent a little family-run Thai restaurant, Royal Thai, on Sahara which was later sold and changed to another Thai restaurant that didn't do that well. Now on another reincarnation as a Thai restaurant, what used to be Royal Thai is now Weera Thai, another family-run restaurant originating from Chiang-Mai and specializing in Northern Thai (Issan food). We went for dinner right after the drive from Los Angeles on a cold Saturday evening.
The restaurant's interiors hasn't changed much but the menu has. What used to be a simpler, smaller menu is now an extensive menu with soups, salads, appetizers, curries, noodles, rice, specials and main courses plus separate sections for Issan specialties and duck dishes.
We ordered a few appetizers: egg rolls, crispy catfish salad and chicken satay then shared several main courses - the Issan specialty Dadd Deaw (deep-fried beef jerky), the Ka Pow Moo Krob (crispy pork belly with Thai holy basil), a mild yellow curry of chicken and the ubiquitous Pad Thai. The service was quick and friendly, the food authentic and almost as good as our old favorite, Royal Thai. With the famous Lotus of Siam always packed, we'll be coming back here more often.
